Recommendations for apartment prepping Part2

An idea that i think about is buying some baggages (or using what you already have) for storing food (especially canned ones). That is because first instead of buying new furniture that allow you to store something baggages are more cheaper at discount stores. Second they have already build to carry things around cramped, tight or crowded places so they have handles and wheels. So changing place of your food prepations within or outside of your apartment is easier. Thirdly lets say you already got a closet and bottom of it is empty. You can put your food baggage to that place easily. So finding a place to put a luggage is easier then finding a place for a furniture.

We have covered somethings about food and water. By the way for water there are some products that you can use to store water in your bathtub. however they are not available in Turkey (and lots of other countires). Also with the popularity of shower cabins even you can find such products, you may not employ them.

And one more thing about food. If you need to cook or warm the food for eating you also make multiple backups for cooking tools. You must have an electrical heater and oven (they are best since they are smokeless and easily controllable) but also need to store a few propane tanks for heating lots amount of water (for hygiene) and if there is a loss of electricity.

Also you may want to store plastic dishes and cups to eliminate cleaning dishes to conserve water.

I will write more about shelters at part 3.

have nice day.

Recommendations for apartment prepping Part1

Hi everyone;

As you see this blog is about prepping in apartment buildings. But as i mentioned earlier i take a casual point of view about level of prepping (i do not consider cases that you will be the last man standing in a world that you will be alone in the planet).
Besides the insane amount of resources, space and mental considerations for such a case, I will consider prepping for a week to month period (may be at most 3 months but even that is hard in an apartment building).

Well here is what i think about prepping in an apartment building:

A person absolutely needs three things to live: food, water and shelter.
Since we are bugging in our apartments we took care of the shelter part. Then we need to acquire food and water. Before talking about food, water must be the single most important thing in an apartment preppers mind.
It is that way because:
a- Water is heavy, so storing it is a lot of problem for an apartment dweller
b- Water can be spent very easily. So it will be first thing to be depleted and force you out of the building.

ready.gov suggest 1 gallon (~4lt) per person for 1 days
then you can calculate the basic necessary amount for you depending on size of your family and plan for water.
(quick look up table for you 1 person -1 week 7 gallon(~27lt) -1 month 30 gallon(113lt) -3 months 90 gallon(341lt) so a family of four will need 360 gallons of water (1363 lt) for 3 months... This is too much to store in an apartment building. Also you need to buy some fabricated water to ensure for drinking quality.

For the food you should consider to buy foods that needs least amount water to cook/eat. Choose/Make cans with high amount of water in them as ready.gov suggests. As with water, finding storage for food is also can be difficult. but it is easier since amount of food for daily use takes less space. For a quick look for food items please visit ready.gov. but a short list is copied here:
  • Ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits, vegetables and a can opener
  • Protein or fruit bars
  • Dry cereal or granola
  • Peanut butter
  • Dried fruit
  • Nuts
  • Crackers
  • Canned juices
  • Non-perishable pasteurized milk
  • High energy foods
  • Vitamins
  • Food for infants
  • Comfort/stress foods
